Hogan places the shapes he has gathered from around the world and creates a metaphor for the way that all things relate. His paintings invoke concealed connections; they tie together things that are unlikely and distant. As if you are flying over the 3rd story, or the rooftop, or higher, Hogan’s paintings show a vantage point where, when you look down, everything is rendered into incredible abstraction and we are all the delicate shapes that float together on an earthen background.

Joshua Hogan looks forward to exhibiting his painting, “A Shared Sense of Wonder” in the VACI Partners exhibition, Patterns and Repetitions: New Abstraction. The exhibition will be on display from August 1st through August 21st in Chautauqua’s Fowler Kellogg Art Center. The reception will be held Thursday, August 1st, from 3-5pm. Hogan’s painting, “A Shared Sense of Wonder”, is an allegory for the interactions he experiences and the relationships between people in his own personal story. The act of painting requires the letting go of perceived memory in exchange for the opportunity to see something new. Painting is how he interprets the stories running through his mind that affect, form, and reshape his own sense-of-self.

For example, Andrew Ooi returns to Aqua Art Miami with gampi cut into thousands of tiny strips, hand painted, and free-folded together in arrangements of shape and color that allows for new information, innovation, and meditation to transpire. Joshua Hogan returns with new paintings from his series, Wild is the Wind, abstracted interpretations of our natural and spiritual world in a way that emphasizes how what we create is reflected back to us. And, Daria Sandburg returns with her current series The Seekers Book of Knowledge an exploration into the feeling of home through historical found object assemblage, sculpture, and painting.

For the inaugural edition of Superfine! Art Fair Washington DC, BoxHeart Gallery exhibits artwork by Sara Catapano, Seth Clark, Kyle Ethan Fischer, Joshua Hogan, Annie Heisey, Heather Kanazawa, Andrew Ooi, Hannah Pierce, Crista Pisano, and Daria Sandburg.

Inspired by the poetic writing of Kahlil Gibran, Joshua Hogan uses the word wayfarer to describe the shapes that dominate his abstract paintings. Artists like Turner, Gorky, and Monet are recognizable influences, but his painting aesthetic slips away from any single stylistic bracket with the coalescence of relics from various movements – an abstract expressionists’ self-exploration, a surrealist’s shapes, an impressionist’s brushstrokes. By emphasizing shape and color to describe energy and environment, Hogan's contemporary paintings illuminate how every choice and action we make impacts other people. We are both path and pedestrian, way and wayfarer. Hogan’s series, "Radiance", is exhibited by UGallery + Crate & Barrel and his current series, "Wild is the Wind" will be exhibited at the Affordable Art Fair in New York City this fall. Hogan lives and works in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.

BoxHeart is honored to have been selected as part of LA Art Show's crowd-favorite "Littletopia" section. Curated by Noah Antieau, "Littletopia" offers an accessible mix of works from emerging voices and is consistently among the most-trafficked areas of the fair. Distinguished as the West Coast's foremost celebration of the visual arts, LA Art Show's upcoming 23rd edition includes the participation of The Broad, LACMA, The Hammer, MOCA, and The Getty.

We look forward to exhibiting exciting new artwork from last year’s exhibiting artists: Seth Clark, Kyle Ethan Fischer, Joshua Hogan, Daria Sandburg, and Irina Koukhanova. For example, Seth Clark returns to Aqua Art Miami with two-dimensional paintings created primarily with found paper to feature architecture on the threshold of ruin and Daria Sandburg returns with her current series River of Blues featuring cast glass boats with fiber sails and miniature assemblage suitcases drifting down a river of broken glass. 

This will mark our second year showing in Miami Beach and our first with Aqua Art Miami. We are looking forward to exhibiting works from our Pittsburgh-based artists Seth Clark, Kyle Ethan Fischer, Joshua Hogan, and Daria Sandburg as well as our international artists Irina Koukhanova, Kal Mansur, and Kuzana Ogg (each of which had solo “Artist of the Year” exhibitions with our gallery).

Joshua Hogan's series of paintings, That was the River, This is the Sea, were created from 2015 to 2016. Like the 1985 acclaimed Waterboys album, This is the Sea, Hogan’s painting process has become second nature. The forms he creates, suspended in a mythical landscape, speak to him. They tell him what to do and where to go, not only in the resulting painting but also in life. Hogan's paintings are poetic. They are intended to portray an abstracted interpretation of our natural and spiritual world in a way that emphasizes how what we create is reflected back to us. Many of his paintings have several incarnations before he feels they are complete, before the painting presents an epiphany of time and memory and the experience that brought him to now.
